MIAMI
- The FIU men's soccer team (2-2-0) put together a valiant rally

helping us out. We had to reshuffle the lineup pretty much right before
kickoff," Coach
Munga Eketebi said. "We really only had two subs, but I still think we
should have been able to pull it off or still tie the game."
Griffin Gilstrap lifted
Stetson (2-0-0) to the win with two goals and an assist on the Hatters'

but they knew that their competition from the East on Interstate-4 would be
no push over.

preseason National Soccer Coaches Association Top 25, pulled out what can be
called nothing short of a "blue-collar" 2-1 win to kick off the 2009

C.J. Phelps is The Palm Beach Post's boys soccer
large-school player of the year
With
five minutes left in the first half of the Class 6A boys soccer regional
semifinals, Boca Raton was trailing Wellington 1-0. That's when Bobcats'
standout midfielder C.J. Phelps received a message from his teammate Kevin
McEntee.
McEntee, who had seen C.J. come through countless times
already in the season, told Phelps that Phelps was going to score before
halftime to tie the game.
McEntee was right. Just two minutes after his prediction,
Phelps drove the ball past three defenders into the box and drilled a shot
into the right corner of the net to tie the game at 1. The Bobcats
eventually won 2-1, but it was Phelps' goal that changed the momentum of the
game.
"I think that was the biggest goal I scored in my high
school career," said Phelps, the Post's large schools boys soccer player of
the year. "It was either score the goal or go home and as a senior and
captain of the team, I didn't want to go home."
The Bobcats rode the emotional victory over their rival
Wellington all the way to the state championship game, where they eventually
lost. But to Phelps, the season was anything but a disappointment.

Hasani Sinclair is The Palm Beach Post's boys soccer
small-school player of the year
It's
not often the senior standout forward doesn't accomplish what he sets out to
do and this season Hasani had 47 goals and 14 assists to lead the Stallions
to the Class 2A state title.
"It was really important for me to win a state title this
year because I wanted to leave the school on top," said Sinclair, The
Post's small schools boys soccer player of the year for the second year
in a row.
Hasani said it was important for him to be remembered as a
winner at Heritage.
"I want to be always be remembered at American Heritage,"
Sinclair said. "I want my legacy as a winner to never be forgotten."
Off the field, Sinclair is a typical teenager. He loves to
joke around and goes as far as to call himself 'goofy'. But once he steps on
the soccer field, the demeanor changes.

Pinellas sweeps Hillsborough in Senior Soccer Challenge
CLEARWATER — It has been quite the senior year for Palm
Harbor University defender Sam Venker.
In February, Venker — anchoring a back line that
surrendered just one playoff goal — led the Hurricanes to the school's third
state championship in boys soccer. Friday, Venker capped his high school
career by scoring the winner in the 16th annual Senior Soccer Challenge at
Countryside High to send the Pinellas All-Stars past the Hillsborough 3-2.
"It's been special," said Venker, chosen as Pinellas' MVP
by the Hillsborough coaching staff. "I came in with my brother (Max). He led
that state title team (in 2006). I tried to step out of the shadow a little
bit. I got my own, and it's been special."

US soccer team prepares in Fla. for World Cup
qualifiers
MIAMI SHORES — Back from Europe and Major League Soccer
openers, U.S. soccer players gathered today to prepare for this weekend's
World Cup qualifier at El Salvador.
Fifteen of the 22 players on the roster
took the field for a brief workout. Six more were due in later Monday, with
Danny Califf expected to arrive from Denmark on Tuesday.
"Today it was about regeneration," U.S.
coach Bob Bradley said. "Of the 15 guys that are here today, I think 10 or
11 played 90 minutes on the weekend, and that's obviously a great thing for
us. It's important with the amount of time a lot of those guys have played
lately to understand what our week needs to be like, and with some of the
guys who haven't played as much we push them a little harder."

Felipe Nascimento, the humble leader
When
a player comes to a new school for his senior year, there are always
questions about how he will fit in with new teammates.
Stephen Lorenc didn't know what to expect when Felipe Nascimento transferred
from Coral Springs to Monarch. But it didn't take long for the Knights'
coach to put Nascimento in a leadership position, making him a captain.
"It speaks volumes of his leadership abilities," Lorenc said. "He didn't
come in here asking for it. He didn't come in here wanting it for himself.
He's just an extremely humble individual."
The senior didn't say much, but his play pushed his teammates all season. He
was the Knights' offensive leader with 18 goals and 19 assists. He helped
propel his team on a run to the FHSAA Class 5A semifinals.
