Boca Raton gunning for a return trip to state
soccer tournament
Boca
High's soccer team enters the season with vacated spots to fill after making
its first state finals appearance since 1990.
Gone are key players C.J. Phelps, Sevin Barnes and Charlie Contreras, who
all graduated and contributed to the Bobcats' high-powered offense that
averaged three goals per match during the first four rounds of the state
playoffs.
But with six returning starters back, including forwards Colby Burdette (26
goals, 17 assists) and midfielder Kevin McEntee (16 goals, 10 assists), the
team should still have ample scoring opportunities.
Another big strength of the team is the playmaking ability from its bench
players. Hector Medolla, Gabriel Ramirez and Mateus Oliveria each totaled 15
assists as reserves.
Lucas Araujo (14 goals, 15 assists) is still recuperating from a torn ACL
that he sustained last season. He is expected to return in either late
December or early January.
"I think only four of our starting positions are locked up," Boca coach
Marcello Castillo said.
"Everybody is still pushing each other in practice. It has created
competition for those starting spots available. I am cautiously optimistic
about this season, but I think this team can be as good as they want to be."
New coach at West Boca
Theo Milos will be taking over the head coaching duties for West Boca after
former coach Jorge Forero chose to step down to pursue another job
opportunity and spend more time with his family.
Milos served as the Bulls' assistant coach last season and had previously
coached at Ely and Boynton Beach.
One of the biggest assets for Milos will be the experience and skill set
that he has on the roster. The Bulls return 13 players, including seven
seniors. Sun Sentinel All-County first-team selection Sam Tovar stands out
as one of Palm Beach County's most dangerous weapons on offense.
