Lander tie 2-2, but Bearcats claim PBC title in shootout

Ga. − After 110 minutes passed in the 2009 Peach Belt Conference Tournament
Men’s Soccer Championship a winner could not be found as No. 1 seed Flagler
College and No. 2 seed Lander University played to a 2-2 draw through two
overtimes Sunday afternoon at Blanchard Woods Park. In the shootout, Lander
came away with four successful attempts to Flagler’s three and earned the
conference tournament title.
The match goes down as a tie for both teams as Flagler is now 14-5-2 and
Lander is now 12-5-2. Both teams will now anxiously await the NCAA Division
II Men’s Soccer Championship Selection Show tomorrow (Nov.9) to see if
either one makes the six-team Southeast Regional. There are no automatic
qualifiers in men’s soccer. Flagler was ranked No. 5 in the final regional
poll while Lander was No. 8.
The Bearcats wasted little time in getting on the board as Jamie Ramm headed
in Craig Hughes’ throw-in in the fourth minute.
Mack Hough (St. Augustine, Fla./Pedro Menendez HS) scored an
equalizer in the 15th minute taking a pass from
Joseph Toby (Jacksonville, Fla./Wolfson HS) and depositing it in
the back of the goal.
Pol Berenguer (Barcelona, Spain/St. Augustine HS) headed in a chip
from
Johan Bergfeld (Akers Styckebruk, Sweden/Rekarnegymnasiet) in the
59th minute to give the Saints a 2-1 lead.
But it was Ramm again, scoring the equalizer for the Bearcats off a free
kick from Stephen Magennis in the 62nd minute.
Flagler added three more shots on goal, but couldn’t find the back of the
net in regulation.
The two overtime periods had only one shot on goal, that from Lander’s Samy
Beydoun which was saved by Flagler keeper
Matt Gilman (Ocala, Fla./Jacksonville U.).
In the shootout to declare the tournament champion, Lander converted
four-of-its-five penalty kicks while Flagler was able to convert three.
Lander out-shot Flagler 17-15, but Flagler held an 8-4 advantage in corner
kicks.
