N.C. − Felippe Imperatriz scored a pair of second half goals to help lead No
4 seed Wingate University to a 4-0 win over No. 5 seed Flagler College in an
opening round match of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Wednesday
night at Mallard Creek High School.
The match was moved from Wingate to Mallard Creek High, who has an
artificial surface field, due to the large amount of rain that fell over the
Carolinas last night which made Wingate’s field unplayable.
Wingate (13-4-1) advances to face No. 1 seed Lees-McRae College (15-2-1) in
Banner Elk, N.C., on Friday (Nov. 13) at 7 p.m. Flagler (14-6-2) had its
seven-match unbeaten streak snapped. The 14 wins by the Saints this year
were the most since 2002 when Flagler went 17-4-0 and lost in the first
round of the NAIA National Tournament to Mid-Continent College.
Luke Mulholland, the South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year, scored
his 16th goal of the season, off a cross from Jack Vundum, in the seventh
minute to put the Bulldogs up 1-0.
Wingate went up 2-0 in the 25th minute when Jamie McKenna took advantage of
a loose ball in front of the goal, off Gui Lima’s shot, and knocked the ball
in.
The score would remain 2-0 at the half.
Imperatriz scored the first of his two goals in the 53rd minute off his
corner kick. He tacked on another in the 80th minute as he chipped one in
from 25 yards out.
Joey Calandra tallied four saves for Wingate and picked up his second
shutout of the year.
Matt Gilman (Ocala, Fla./Jacksonville U.) also recorded four saves
for the Saints.
Wingate out-shot Flagler 15-11, but the two teams split 16 corner kicks
evenly.
